Magnum Photo Assignment
Hannah Price
By: Amanda Schaeffer
I picked Hannah Price for the Magnum Photo Assignment due to her photographs standing out to me. I researched her work and saw she had a series of "Brotherly Love" where she took pictures of Philadelphia life of people and the conditions the city has that they have to live with. I love Philadelphia because the city is only two hours away from where I live and my family likes visiting there and watching the Phillies baseball team. Maybe I'm biased of why I chose her since she did take so many photos in Philadelphia and I love that city, but I can say that I still like her work nonetheless.
One of her works that caught my eye was the above photograph of a young woman in front of a car in a neighborhood. This image really intrigues me since the main focus is the woman, but the background is all a blur. You would think the background would be distracting and make the viewer not pay attention to the main focus but it actually works out. It's not distracting and gives the viewer the scenery of where the woman is. The scenery also shows why the woman has on a buffer jacket and looks cold. The background lets us see that there is snow on the ground and no leaves on the trees. So I think the "busy" background isn't distracting and also adds information to the viewer. Another reason why I was drawn to this image is how commercial it is. I want to pursue commercial photographer so maybe my interest is what made me pick Hannah Price for my Magnum Photo Assignment. I like the pose she incorporated and how she's leaning near the white car behind her. Maybe I wouldn't include the background of the houses and cars if this was a senior portrait of mine, but for Price it worked out. The woman is also all in focus which is how a senior portrait would be. It lets the viewer focus on the person while the eyes don't really go to the background because it would be blurry. However, I think the the car behind her is a little blown out because of how white it is. Maybe the exposure could go down some or maybe go in Photoshop and paint over the white car and turn down the highlights or exposure. So maybe she can't change it now because the photo is already taken, but you can try to fix and retouch stuff in Photoshop at least. Other than that minor critique, I love Hannah Price's photograph of this young woman in a neighborhood.
I fourthly enjoyed looking through Hannah Price's photographs and seeing which one caught my eye. Like I said previously, I'm more drawn to commercial work and that's probably why I was interested in this particular image. I love the composition and the colors of the image. The background gives more detail to the image without being too distracting. However, I did think the white car behind the woman is a little washed out. If Price would adjust that in photoshop, I think the image would be excellent then for me. Even though I did have one small critique about Hannah Price's image, I still enjoy the composition and the scenery of the image that she captured of the young woman.
