Christian Vogt
Christian Vogt seems to photograph a couple different styles in photography. In Vogt's gallery, he published landscape, portraits, and still life photographs. With his portraits, he is more focused on nudity and being simple. Vogt mostly captures females for his portraits when it's focused on nudity. Although, his male clients he has taken of them were more simple. He also takes full body portraits of men and women with their clothing on and their eyes closed. They all dress in different clothing with their expression. However, his landscape photos are incredible and breathtaking of the views he captures.
For this blog, I thought I pick the portrait that was the strangest to me. Vogt had a section named "closed eyes serious" on his website where I found this photograph. This particular one spoke out to me since there are characteristics presented in this image that we have talked about in class. Primarily, I noticed that his eyes were closed in this portrait. I remember in class that closing your eyes doesn't necessarily ruin the photo because sometimes the image turns out good with it. In this photograph, with his eyes closed, it makes me think that he is dreaming of some sort or imaging something. Particularly due to the objects behind him on the shelf. Those objects seem to be instruments in cases. Maybe this man is thinking or imaging his next concert or his next song. Also, his jean jacket seems like he could be part of a country band or some type of music genre that is laid back. Through photography, you can really get a taste of what an image is about.
This photograph doesn't seem like there would be any changes to it. The placement of the man to be in the center of the image was a good choice. Also, I like the lighting that was used in this photograph. It seems like either a flash or a strobe light that has a cone over it that makes the light circular and more directional. However, I like the vignette that is portrayed in the photograph. It gives an incredible effect to the portrait. I believe the only thing I would change to this photo, is the black speck above his head. With that black dot being there, it distracts my eyes from focusing on the man. I believe the background balances the portrait well enough that it isn't disproportionate. Overall, this portrait by Christian Vogt was well executed with the man's eyes closed and having the stunning studio lighting.
