Robert Mapplethorpe has an incredible taste in photography with still life. While looking at the various still life examples for our project, Mapplethorpe's images captured my eyes on how simple but yet fascinating to look at. At first I didn't know what kind of light he was using for his photos. Then, I saw window shades in the lighting so I assume Mapplethorpe uses natural lighting from a window to capture the beautiful shadows that are projected onto the objects. I love how the light bounces off of the vase and gives us a reflection of the sunlight. I also really enjoy the the placement of the flower in the vase. I love how it is placed on some sort of shelve or table near a window. Also, I enjoy the roundness of the vase. Normally vases are shaped as a cylinder and are clear. However, this vase is rounded and isn't see through. The sunflower also adds to the beauty of the image with the flower being fully grown and being the only flower left in the vase. Furthermore, I simply enjoy Mapplethorpe's image of the sunflower and love seeing his other still life photographs.

Through a non expert photographer view, I don't entirely see anything wrong with this image. If I had to critique something of his work is that the vase might be a hair out of focus or that Mapplethorpe could have added maybe some petals of the sunflower and lay it around the vase on the shelf. However, I don't think those two critiques are that important to note on for his work. Some of my still life photos that I just processed came out a little blurry then what I was hoping for so maybe it's due to taking still life photos. Although, it was fun to experiment with different lighting in the studio room and to also use the different colored backdrops to make my still life images. I really like the whole concept of the studio room to get beautiful shadows and light on objects. I hope this would be the same concept of wanting a home studio to take portraits of people when I am older. I love the atmosphere that the studio brings and what photos you can create in there.
